Suga Mitra - Build a School in the Cloud

At a time when educators everywhere are struggling to modernize an education system that was developed by and for an outdated British empire, Sugata provides a bold starting point. The real significance of his work is probably less about solving the problem of access to education for the underprivileged than it is about re-imagining the whole concept of education in the digital age. In a Forbes interview, he says, "our current definition of education is to produce individuals who can fit into a bureaucratic machine. Education prepares to be one piece of a machine. ... Everything falls into place and that is why everyone dresses the same way and why everyone is taught to know the same things. The result is a society that creates identical factory workers. The day of the factory is done. The West needs a fresh model."

The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America

This video was originally created to be part of an art exhibit for Exposed the Art Project , a multimedia collaboration raising awareness of social issues. The group decided that the message in the Deliberate Dumbing Down of America shouldn't be put on hold. So here it is. The other artists of Exposed the Art Project are: painters Barry Gross and Viktor Safonkin, and photographers Adela Holmes and Presscott McDonald. We picked four themes for our premier—Social Commentary, Spirituality, Metamorphosis and Time and Chance. To see/hear more of Neal's work go to TheRealNealFox.com

Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. Progressive Education in the 1940s

Remember when America lead the world in education? This video presents a 1940s positive view of progressive education although it begins with a parent complaining that children are not learning the fundamentals. Various educators are seen including famed John Dewey. One skeptic asserts that ideas similar to progressive education caused a collapse of the ancient Greek civilization. Current debates about educational techniques in many respects seem similar to what was occurring in the 1940s.
