The Labor Day holiday, the US version of International Workers' Day, also marks a big transition for most people in the States. When I was a kid, it meant it was time to go back to school. Though now it seems many schools start up way before September, I remember a time when summer vacation went right up through the Labor Day weekend. All the jitters of having a new teacher, a new class, and maybe a new school combines with the excitement of seeing old classmates again and being one year older and one year wiser (and hopefully one year cooler) when heading back to school.
