Lisa Harouni - A Primer on 3D Printing

2012 was probably the year of 3D printing, when this three-decade-old technology finally became accessible and even commonplace.

Lisa Harouni gives a useful introduction to this fascinating way of making things -- including intricate objects once impossible to create.

Lisa Harouni is the co-founder of Digital Forming, working in "additive manufacturing" -- or 3D printing.

Bicycle-powered Tank Game (aka SMKCycle)

There is no sound because there is no relevant audio and we probably don't enjoy the same music. As part of an internal game jam here at the office I modified my SMKCycle (an exercise bike I retrofitted using Arduino to play Super Mario Kart on my SNES) to interface with unity and a colleague, Mike McGraw, made a 3-D game designed around the bike. The Game Jam had a 1 week time frame and all work was done on evenings/weekends. I must admit that my contribution (the bike modifications) was probably significantly smaller than Mike's (the game) but everything ended up pretty well. The game itself puts the rider in the position of defending the town/himself from rampaging alien oranges (The game jam had specific themes). There are 2 modes the bike can be in, a travel mode where peddling moves you forward at a relative speed and the left/right buttons turn left and right. Once you are in a position to fire on the vile citrus you can press the center button and switch to gun mode. In gun mode the tank stops and begins shooting (the rate of fire is commensurate to the speed at which you peddle) and left/right again turns left and right. At any time you can press the center button to swap between the different modes. Thanks again to Mike McGraw for being interested in the project enough to dedicate some real time to it.

Conan O'Brien - NBC Farewell Speech Kinetic Typography

Digital Design (Spring 2011) Oklahoma State University Professor Justen Renyer Software: Illustrator, Soundbooth, Cinema 4D, After Effects This Kinetic Typography project was created from the dialogue of Conan O'Brien's final episode of The Tonight Show on NBC. In this farewell address, he describes his feelings towards NBC and the situation at hand. His personality exudes positivity and humor allowing this dialogue to describe his character very well. Even through the hardships of leaving NBC he promotes hard work and kindness. The concept behind this video is to show Conan O'Brien as a the monumental entertainer and solid wall that he is. Conan O'Brien is and will continue to be a seasoned television entertainer. After drawing inspiration from Lou Dorfsman's Gastrotypographicalassemblage, this concept was achieved by creating a literal wall from over 60 individual typographic layouts. These custom crafted layouts reference a variety of eclectic type design. The combination of eclectic typography and modern 3D letter forms achieved in Cinema 4D provides a contrast between old and new. This contrast emphasizes time to create a sturdy and timeless object. This solidity and timelessness is the perfect representation of Conan O'Brien. More projects at behance.net/jacobgilbreath

Droid Rage

First animated short by amateur 3d film maker Ken Dunn offers an explanation of how the Empire tracked down those rebels with the stolen plans. All original models, sets, animation, and score make this a one man show taking place in the much [over] emulated STAR WARS universe. Many of the sets from the opening scenes of episode IV are reproduced in loving detail here in "Droid Rage" making it a worthy addition to a fan tradition.

Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.
