What is AJAX?

Asynchronous Javascript And Xml (AJAX) is not a language or framework in its own right, rather, it is a web development technique whereby a web application (or even just a single website page) can be used to update content dynamically as the user interacts with the web application (or web page). While the interactivity side is often touted as the greatest part of AJAX and has enjoyed extensive marketing hype (with the terms "Web 2.0", "Read/Write Web" & "Social Media" among others being used to promote AJAX-based applications and sites as the "next-big-thing"), AJAX's real power comes from its ability to display raw data in a number of formats (i.e. XML as in the name, but also JSON, CSV, HTML snippets and others) as just about any presentational format (i.e. tables, charts, graphs, infographics, search forms/results, videos, music players, WYSIWG editors, quizzes, in-browser games, or just plain old text and images). This effective separation of data and presentation gives developers the power to create visually relevant information experiences for their users in real-time, and takes the world a step closer to the Semantic Web of interconnected data envisioned by the web's creator, Tim Berners-Lee.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
