March 31st Deadline… submission of 3 minute preview of your independent film you’d like to produce.

From Here To Awesome (FHTA) is an emerging Online Independent Film Festival.

BC$ will be submitting an entry just for the fun of it!

As the old adage goes, “try, try again!”

In case you have not heard the news, we were not selected for the final round of the Global Mobile Monday Peer Awards in Malaysia. The BC$ team is taking the results of the March 24th competition in Tokyo to heart, and thinking of ways to improve our approach to defining and promoting the business. Through the MoMo Tokyo Peer Awards, we’ve been reminded that it is indeed “business” that should be at the core of any technological effort. Without a valid reason for a service to exist (i.e. convenience to users, creates utility in the market place, serves an unfulfilled need, educates, entertains, etc…), we see that technology is nothing more than an empty screen with some text, images, maybe video and other pretty stuff. Without the users, technology serves little purpose.

Focusing on “winning a contest” and “launching a new business” are also two entirely different things.

For that reason,  FHTA will likely be our next, and likely the last major contest we enter before launching Beta Services. Meanwhile from April onwards, we will be focusing our efforts on developing the technology and in particular, structuring the business model so that it is guaranteed to be not only viable and sustainable, but also useful.

    It is with great regret that we inform you that we will no longer be entering the From Here to Awesome Film Festival.

    For those few loyal subscribers who may have been waiting for our first production to see just what kind of new approaches we’re taking to content production and distribution, please rest assured that our submission to this festival, along with many other intreaguing ideas, will be released over the coming months.

    The decision to not submit to FHTA this time around was due, plain and simply, to unfortunate timing. The previous Tokyo Peer Awards were a taxing process that taught us that perhaps winning a contest is not the best approach for our current needs and ultimate goals. Such contests tend to be great at generating short-lived hype or temporary media coverage, however this is not the type of impact we intend to make on the digital media distribution chain.

    This should in no regards be taken as a disagreement with the FHTA festival, its organizers, or the excellent virtues for which it stands, and we wish each and every contestant the best of luck this time around. Once we’ve taken care of the core business and technology problems (we’re speaking of course of our emerging Recommendation Engine), we may even join them at a future FHTA festival, who knows!

    All the best to FHTA 2008, and don’t lose hope just yet… BC$ is coming to a screen near you very soon!!!

    Due to several independent filmmakers’ requests, FHTA’s submission deadline was extended to April 14th at midnight.

    We just got wind of this earlier this week and are considering our options.
    BC$ may be submitting something to the first annual FHTA Film Festival afterall, please stay tuned.

    THIS JUST IN FROM THE FHTA TEAM:

    “If you’re receiving this email it is because you have submitted a film to From Here to Awesome.

    First off, thanks for taking the time to create a submission video and for submitting your project to the fest. This is a quick update to let you know what’s happening with the festival and to give you a chance to make a final push around your films and to prepare yourself for possible inclusion in the festival showcase.

    FINAL DEADLINE – JUNE 6th
    JUNE 6th is the deadline for voting. So this is a good time to start making your final pushes across various outlets. Remember that a number of factors our weighted to determine the showcased films – did the film create a submission video, how many people awesomed the film on FHTA, how many people favorited, viewed, commented and linked to the videos on youTube and myspace. And finally how has the film done in terms of spreading the word about their film online and off.

    STEPS TO THE SHOWCASE:
    The top 10 feature and short films will be contacted and 2 DVDs of the film will be requested. These will be used for the legal vetting process to ensure that films can be distributed through all outlets. Filmmakers will be asked to sign a wavier that states that they own the rights to the film and have all the necessary clearances and release forms in order.

    Attached is a spreadsheet that lays out the materials that will be needed by the various outlets. NOT all the FHTA distribution outlets are listed but we wanted to provide some materials to help you start thinking of what will be needed. This is known as delivery and it is the steps that a filmmaker needs to take to prepare his or her work for various forms of distribution. Not all things will be needed but they could. Before incurring any costs please consult with FHTA staff to ensure that you need to. The last thing we want is for a filmmaker to spend money that they don’t have to. BUT we wanted to share this to give you an idea of things that could be required for the showcased films.

    TIMING ISSUES:
    VERY IMPORTANT – from the time the films are notified of inclusion in the showcase IMMEDIATE delivery of all materials will be key to a film staying in the showcase. So if a film doesn’t provide the materials that are requested they will be replaced by the film that is next in line. We realize that this is a very quick turnaround but in order to take advantage of all the distribution outlets and promotional opportunities (over $500,000 in promotional placements for festival films across Amazon, myspace, youTube and other partner sites) all materials will need to be delivered within in 14 days of acceptance.
